A BUSINESSMAN, who was earlier convicted of hiring an expatriate worker illegally, was declared innocent by the High Criminal Appeals Court. The Bahraini man, 56, was fined BD500 by the Lower Criminal Court for illegally hiring the Indian man.
I WOULD like to know about the registration with the Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) regarding domestic drivers.
Is it compulsory for them to register? If so, what are the requirements?
A friend of mine who is working at a ministry wants to know whether registration with the LMRA is compulsory for him.

* AN LMRA spokesman said: “Domestic labour that are under the sponsorship of individuals or families (housemaids, house drivers, etc) will be mandated to complete all LMRA formalities later this year. However, they can still enrol (register) now at our enrolment centre in Bahrain International Exhibition Centre, until June 21.”
We have been forced to sign a letter as follows:
“The employee shall not at any time for a period of one year after leaving the … company, without written approval seeking or obtaining employment or be directly or indirectly involved in any business or company or individual that competes directly or indirectly with the business of …company with the Kingdom of Bahrain.”
THE LMRA should be commended for its work and its mission, which we expect should improve the lot of both expatriates and Bahrainis alike as it relates to workers’ rights and improving employment opportunities for nationals.
However, in the past two weeks, we have been deeply shocked by the manner in which the LMRA has conducted its registration process at Bahrain International Investment Park, Hidd.
I HAVE visited all LMRA registration centres including those in Saar, Hidd, Sitra and even the Indian Club to get registered. I even went to the centre they opened at the Bahrain International Exhibition Centre last week, but all of them were quite disorganised, to say the least.
All centres have only one registration counter to process data of not less than 200-300 people at any given time.
I WAS recruited by a local business group through a local agent and arrived in Bahrain in mid last year on a contracted salary of BD375 per month along with the usual benefits.
However, after a period of three months, the company reduced my salary by BD125, stating that my performance was not up to the mark.

THE fate of an organisation, aimed at promoting ties between Bangladesh and Bahrain, will not be affected by visa restrictions on the community, officials declared yesterday.
The Bahrain Bangladesh Friendship Forum (BBFF) was set up last year as part of efforts to promote business and cultural ties.

NEARLY 19,000 expatriates registered with the Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) during the first four days of its enrolment festival.
However, organisers are disappointed with the low turnout, especially on Friday, when only 2,748 people came to register.
