Apart from Indian Embassy officials, I would request the Ministry of Labour and LMRA to come forward to help the person, enabling him to leave the kingdom since he has not seen his family for six years. Please ensure that he gets all his dues from his previous employer. B G Dhar

Paying my way

I would like to ask the Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) and the Labour Ministry for their advice on the following matter. I am an expatriate worker and I have resigned from my current employer. According to the contract, they are liable to deduct the visa, CPR and air ticket expenditure from me for employment in Bahrain.

This expenditure, according to my knowledge through some very reliable sources, is BD250 to BD300, since I did not come through any recruitment consultant. Nevertheless, the management is claiming BD600-BD700.

Minimum wage for expatriates ‘vital’

MANAMA

THE government must introduce a minimum wage for all expatriates to safeguard the rights of Bahrain’s foreign labour force, say human rights activists.

BHRS adviser Abdulnabi Al Ekri said employers continue to treat expatriate workers like “slaves”, paying them BD50 a month and forcing them to work seven days a week.

Worker ‘being held hostage’

An Indian man was allegedly being held hostage by his Bahraini sponsor last night for filing a complaint against him at the Indian Embassy.

The 39-year-old, who has been working for three years at an aluminium workshop in Salmabad, was said to have been locked up to prevent him from accompanying the dead body of his wife’s brother-in-law home.
