I refer to the letter “Family reunion by worker” (GDN, April 22). Apart from Indian Embassy officials, I would request the Ministry of Labour and LMRA to come forward to help the person, enabling him to leave the kingdom since he has not seen his family for six years. Expat muezzins in red-tape trap
By BASMA MOHAMMED
EXPATRIATES working at mosques find themselves trapped in Bahrain because no one is paying for their visas, it has emerged.
They tend to stay in the country after their visas are expired because they fear losing their jobs if they return to their countries for new ones to be issued.
Paying my way
I would like to ask the Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) and the Labour Ministry for their advice on the following matter. I am an expatriate worker and I have resigned from my current employer. According to the contract, they are liable to deduct the visa, CPR and air ticket expenditure from me for employment in Bahrain.
This expenditure, according to my knowledge through some very reliable sources, is BD250 to BD300, since I did not come through any recruitment consultant. Nevertheless, the management is claiming BD600-BD700.
Minimum wage for expatriates ‘vital’
MANAMA
THE government must introduce a minimum wage for all expatriates to safeguard the rights of Bahrain’s foreign labour force, say human rights activists.
BHRS adviser Abdulnabi Al Ekri said employers continue to treat expatriate workers like “slaves”, paying them BD50 a month and forcing them to work seven days a week.
Rude shock
I WAS recruited by a local business group through a local agent and arrived in Bahrain in mid last year on a contracted salary of BD375 per month along with the usual benefits.
However, after a period of three months, the company reduced my salary by BD125, stating that my performance was not up to the mark.
