A COMPREHENSIVE labour agreement that aims to protect the welfare of Indian workers and housemaids is to be signed between Bahrain and India next month. Overseas Indian Affairs Minister Vayalar Ravi will authorise the deal with Labour Minister Dr Majeed Al Alawi during a visit to Bahrain on December 4. They signed an initial Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Kumarakom, Kerala earlier this year.
FIFTY-NINE labour market violations were reported to the General Prosecution up to September 30.
Of these, five cases have been referred to the courts for legal action, Labour Market Regulatory Authority deputy chief executive for legal enforcement Yunis Al Hermi said yesterday.
An employer has been fined BD24,000 in an out-of-court settlement for illegally hiring 24 expatriates.

FISHERMEN are planning to go on a nation-wide strike within two weeks in protest over fees imposed by the Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) for each expatriate worker.
Expatriates may report to the Labour Market Regulatory Authority for their CPR procedures. The Sanabis-based LMRA processes such services on working days between 2pm and 8pm.
The initiative has been co-ordinated with the General Informatics Organisation to cut waiting lists for expatriates and their families, LMRA chief executive Ali Ahmed Radhi said yesterday .

THE transparent procedures adopted by Bahrain’s Labour Market Regulatory Authority have gone a long way towards eliminating unscrupulous labour market agents, an international conference in the Philippines has been told.
HUNDREDS of Bahraini fishermen yesterday staged a protest over a BD10 monthly fee imposed by the Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) for each expatriate worker.
It was organised by the Fishermen’s Protection Society at its premises in Muharraq.
