Of more than 21,000 Egyptians living in the Kingdom, 32 per cent are working in the educational sector, an official statistics showed.

Bosses face new charges to hire expatriates

Employers wishing to exceed their regular quota will have to pay an additional BD300 for each extra expatriate worker they hire – on the basis of BD150 annually. Apart from the additional fees, employers will still be required to pay the regular two-year BD200 levy and monthly fees on each foreign worker. Employers who fail to adhere to Bahrainisation quotas will be fined or have work permits cancelled, a top official warned. The Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) has accused employers of consistently abusing the Bahrainisation Law, which states that a Bahraini has to be hired for every four foreign workers. Bahrain praised for workers’ protection

Bahrain has some of the best protections for migrant workers in the Gulf, according to a top International Labour Organisation (ILO) representative. The ILO has witnessed a surge in complaints related to workers’ rights in the region, but regional desk officer at its Arab Region Worker Activities Bureau Nezam Qahoush said “the situation is far better in Bahrain”.
