MPs have been accused of trying to bring back slavery, after agreeing that runaway housemaids should be fined BD500 if they are caught.
They voted in favour of the proposal during parliament’s session last Tuesday, despite objections from Labour Minister Dr Majeed Al Alawi.

FISH could virtually disappear from Bahrain’s markets from Sunday when fishermen plan to go on an indefinite nationwide strike. It will be spearheaded by the Bahrain Fishermen Society in collaboration with the Bahraini Fishermen Trade Union and local fish importers.
One must praise LMRA for starting off with a clear intention to be transparent and progressive.

CHILDREN of Bahraini women married to expatriates could soon be given the same rights as their counterparts of Bahraini parents.
The Shura Council yesterday decided to include a new article in a government-drafted law that gives expatriate wives married to Bahrainis equal treatment.
MANAMA: The Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) and Tamkeen (Labour Fund) made presentations for Asian businessmen at a forum.
The event was organised by the Bahrain Asia Trading Committee (BATC) of the Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI).

NEARLY half of the work visas issued by the Labour Market Regulatory Authority are now processed within 24 hours, a top official has revealed.
Out of 13,200 issued last month, more than 6,300 were processed within a day, said Interior Ministry Nationality, Passports and Residence assistant under-secretary Shaikh Ahmed bin Isa Al Khalifa.
