The National Committee to Combat Trafficking in Persons has agreed to develop an action plan for technical cooperation with international organizations, particularly in the field of training.The decision was announced by Ausamah Al Absi, CEO of the Labour Market Regulatory (LMRA) and Chairman of the Committee, while presenting a summary on the results of the National Committee’s previous meeting with the United Nations Organization to combat Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in the GCC and the Organization International Migration (IOM).

The announcement was made at the National Committee’s fourth meeting held on Sunday at the LMRA centre.

The technical cooperation aims at enhancing skills and capabilities of the nation, and developing cooperation mechanisms and exchange of experiences in the legal field of labour, in addition to supporting the establishment of a national centre specialized in the field of combating human trafficking.

Al Absi also conveyed an agreement with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to organize two training workshops with trained personnel with regard to combating human trafficking.

The first workshop is aimed at training emergency physicians for the method of identifying the victim and treatment. The second workshop is aimed at civil society organizations, which will discuss the possibility of cooperating with IOM on expat labour awareness.

Al Absi confirmed that the LMRA committee’s new system can finally shape on the protection of migrant workers, pointing out that the system is a coordination between security and civil institutions to provide protection for abused workers, and will be equipped with a contact to receive labour complaints efficiently with several languages.

With regard to the establishment of a comprehensive shelter for victims, the Committee reviewed the efforts made and expressed keenness to complete all related equipment as soon as possible and according to specifications and international standards.

The Committee also agreed to form the executive and the 2015- 2016 strategic plans and a subcommittee chaired by Public Attorney and General Wael Buallay to formulate a national strategy to combat trafficking in persons.
