99% employers obey law

Labour Minister Jameel Humaidan said 99 per cent employers in the Kingdom adhered to the afternoon work ban this year. He said the percentage has increased by 1pc from 98 last year. The minister said the result was achieved because of the cooperation that existed between the ministry and contractors for the past four years.

He said the ministry had begun its inspection visits during early May this year to ensure workers’ safety. More than 20,000 worksites had been examined for the purpose, he said. He added there were 106 employers, among a total of 20,246 who broke the law.

He added that the ministry had prepared a number of awareness programmes for employers, vocational safety supervisors and workers. The ministry distributed a number of awareness posters and leaflets to workers with translations in various languages.

Mr Humaidan emphasised the ministry’s keenness to continue the enforcement of the humane and multi-dimensional resolution that promoted workers’ satisfaction.

The afternoon work ban during the two months of July and August affects a large chunk of workforce. The ban reflects the Kingdom’s commitment to labourers’ welfare, Mr Humaidan said
